Tips & Tricks for the virtual classroom

The classroom is no longer limited to a brick and mortar setting and thus a multitude of people have access to an infinite amount of information. The onset of virtual learning has widened the possibilities for a large portion of the global community. In addition, the endless learning tools and management systems have not only heightened the expectations for the digital classroom but also broadened options.

Recently, EdTech Insiders hosted a virtual event entitled Teaching & Learning in a Multimodal World in which experts discussed the rapidly changing role of curriculum and instruction and the influence of AI in creating a more dynamic experience. The speakers highlighted the push towards active learning vs. passive learning and emphasized instructors working in tandem with AI to create material.

Although AI is a helpful resource to implement into the classroom environment, most instructors carry a wealth of personal and practical techniques which can be used in the classroom. These techniques range from setting daily clear expectations and objectives to providing a space for reflection and cognitive pressure release. Incorporating these methods into the class can have a drastic impact on the success and experience of learners in the digital environment. Creating a digital environment that is not only organized and structured but welcoming and engaging is also key to creating a space in which learners feel comfortable participating and growing in their language endeavors.

Personally, I feel including moments for active listening, noticing and reflecting are important for students that thrive in a calm and quiet environment and are helpful for more extroverted students to ensure they are completely focused on the task. I also feel music is a valuable tool for the virtual setting as it sets the precedent for the tone of the classroom, provides a brain break and is a resource for exploring tone, stress, implications and cultural references.
